Summer Team Reflections

Hey, Thinking Rockers! Gracie and Kyenna here, Thinking Rock’s 2023 Summer Students! 

As our time at Thinking Rock comes to an end, we’re reflecting on the many new wonderful experiences we’ve had here. Connecting with the broader Algoma community through various events has been so informative and super fun!

Throughout July and August, we took part in 18 different events, including Social Fabric drop-in sessions at the Old Stone House, Ojibway Park, the Northern Community Centre and the Thessalon Public Library. We joined in on the fun of Making Nights, Social Fabric Communi-Bees, and special events like the Strawberry Social and Algoma Fabric to Fibre Fest. Throughout these events, we worked together to plan and deliver new activities that focussed on youth. During Thessalon’s community days car show, Gracie created a craft utilizing a variety of materials to fit the theme! At the Old Stone House’s Strawberry Social, we worked together to gather materials for a strawberry paper pouch craft, later utilizing the strawberries for a chain in the TRHQ window.

We also continued working on ongoing Social Fabric works, including the messages of love, mending list, and UFO quilts. At Ojibwe park, we created more social fabrics for Thinking Rock’s stash, learning a process that’s foundational to the Social Fabric project. We’re delighted to invite you to our Open House on August 26th, where we’ll share some of these works while connecting with community members and displaying the pieces they added to!

We had some challenges throughout the summer, but throughout each, we worked together as a team. This summer has taught us both a lot about the importance of teamwork. We will carry the experiences and lessons we have learned with us for the rest of our lives, along with the memories of connection, love, and laughter. We both look forward to continuing to participate in programming! We cannot wait to see what happens next on Thinking Rock’s journey! Summer Open House: You are Invited!

Join Us Saturday, August 26th from 10 am to 2 pm for a public Open House at Thinking Rock HQ (199 Main Street in downtown Thessalon, ON).

All are invited to visit the space, meet members of the team, and learn more about our free, inclusive community arts-based programming!

We'll share some of the Social Fabric artworks we've co-created in and with community, in a special mini-exhibition; and you can join in on the fun by adding some stitches to a current work-in-process, or colour our custom-designed fabric (pictured). No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Light refreshments will be served.

Please note that while the main programming space is accessible via a ramp to the sidewalk in front of the building, we do not have a wheelchair accessible washroom facility. A wheelchair accessible washroom is available between 9am and 1pm that day, at the Thessalon Public Library, located across the street.
